Emergence of Rap Collectives in Ghana’s music landscape

When the La Meme Gang first described themselves as not a rap group, but a ‘Rap Collective’, it took the Ghanaian music audience a bit of time to first of all understand them, and secondly recognize their intentions behind such a description of their little clan.

It is remarkable that in a few interviews during their media tours, members of La Meme made it a point to clarify that whiles they are a group of rappers/singers who make music together, they are not a music group in the traditional sense, the difference between their collective and a group is a group is a unit, while a collective is made up of independent artistes who occasionally teams up to make music.

Fast forward to 2023, which is 7 years since their first record ‘Snakes’ came out, it has become very clear that the members of la meme are indeed unique and stand-alone artistes by themselves, DarkoVibes has 2 albums out, Spacely has 1 album, whiles the rest of the other members, KiddBlack, RJZ, KwakuBS and Nxwrth have put out various individual projects.

Following the success of La Meme, a significant number of aspiring musicians, especially in the Alte scene took notice and put together their own rap collectives.

Below is a list of the notable rap collectives that have gained roots since La Meme Gang showed the way:

GROUND UP

The next rap collective to make waves after La Meme is the Tema based Ground Up crew, spear headed by Kwesi Arthur. Following Arthur success with his debut single ‘Grind day’, other artistes under the Ground Up banner have also achieved significant success, rap acts such as KOFI MOLE, TWITCH FOREVER, KWAMINA MP and BIG HOMIE FLEE have all made their mark in the music scene.

ASAKAA BOYS

Another rap collective rose up in Kumasi known as the Asakaa boys, consisting of Reggie Osei, O’Kenneth, Kawabanga, Sean Lifer, Obey, Kwaku DMC, Braa Benk, Cedi Boy and Jay Bahd. Whiles La Meme spearheaded the alte music scene in Ghana, the Asakaa boys pioneered Ghana’s drill sound.

BLOOD LINE RECORDINGS

Whiles not a household name yet, the Ga based rap collective spear headed by the smooth rapping Chief Kellz has other members such as A-Clipse, Big Papi Flocksta and Psyko Worldwide.

LOCO ALL DAY (#LAD)

Another rap collective based out of Kumasi making waves on the Alte scene is LAD. Previously spearheaded by the ‘Grimy’ hit makers Yarw Teasy and Jae Bone, Loco All Day now consists of
